Learned societies exist to advance disciplines, support researchers and practitioners, and serve their communities. Yet many societies are being asked to do more with less, responding to funding pressures, concerns about academic freedom and research independence, changing member expectations, and broader economic realities that are placing new demands on their organisations. Against this backdrop, publishing remains both a critical source of income and an important expression of mission.
In 2026, society publishing is also being reshaped by AI, research integrity demands, open access funding pressures, and rising expectations for speed, transparency, and data-driven workflows. For many organisations, the question is no longer simply whether to publish independently or with a commercial partner, but how to identify the right balance between mission, control, capability, and sustainability.
This webinar will explore the opportunities and trade-offs of different partnership models—from fully independent publishing to strategic commercial partnerships, outsourced services, and newer collaborative approaches. Speakers will discuss where societies may benefit from retaining capabilities in-house, where external expertise can add value, and how partnership choices can strengthen resilience while preserving mission and community trust.
Attendees will gain practical insight into evaluating partnership options, understanding the advantages and potential drawbacks of different models, and making informed decisions that support both organisational sustainability and long-term scholarly impact.
