Overview

Increasingly, book publishers are turning to data. Whether it’s to understand usage and impact, to commission new content or to communicate their benefits, there is an increasingly wide range of sources that can be used by the data-savvy publisher.

This course is broken down into several functional units, addressing where publishers can use this data to supplement their understanding of important areas of interest and develop novel insights into topics.

Data being examined will include usage, citations, and altmetrics across areas as diverse as social media, news, blogs, Wikipedia, and policy citations. We will also investigate subject area and topic analyses to show how data can be used to identify and quantify emergent topics.

Programme

  • What are book metrics and how do they compare with journal metrics?
  • Common misconceptions and problems in usage and metrics
  • Strategies to maximize usage and impact
  • Practical session on using the most common citation indexes
  • What is research impact? What is the broader/social impact?
  • Why data is becoming more important in book publishing

Who should attend?

The training is aimed at individuals working in editorial, marketing, data analyst roles, and anyone involved in conducting or presenting the results of citations, altmetric, or usage data. It is suitable for those with direct responsibility for data and metrics, or with broader knowledge of the book publishing process.

What will you learn?

You will be able to understand and explain usage data, citations, and altmetric data from the perspective of a book publisher. These data-driven approaches will be used to recruit potential authors, assess markets and the size of the market, and how to understand the visibility of your books and its market driven impact. The importance of data in the sales and marketing of books will be discussed as it is a vital component of a book’s lifecycle. You will learn to articulate the benefits of and use this data in specific roles within book publishing and develop a unique view on the future direction of metrics and their role in the industry. Differentiators between book and journal metrics will be explained, and several subscription products and free alternatives will be demonstrated.
