Overview

This highly successful course has been designed as a follow-on from Journal Development 1 which provides participants with a toolbox system for planning the development of their journals. However, it is not essential to have taken the first course. This more advanced event looks at overarching strategies for journal development including acquisitions, portfolio development and partnerships. The course is built around case studies to allow participants to work on simulated scenarios so they can discuss and test ideas and strategies with their peers and the course facilitators. There will be plenty of time given to breakout rooms and practical work.

Programme

Key topics:

  • Development assessment – determining the characteristics of effective journals
  • Understanding the big picture – industry trends and wider context
  • Portfolio analysis to build strategy and a practical action plan
  • Journal communities and partnerships
  • Financial considerations and different business models
  • Open access challenges and opportunities
  • Using market research, intelligence and competitor analysis
  • Bringing it all home – applying the learning to your portfolio.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at delegates who have experience of managing and developing journals and are looking for a more advanced workshop that will build on their knowledge and experience and focus on higher-level strategic decision-making. Delegates will ideally have already taken the ALPSP Journal Development 1 course, although this is not essential.

What will you learn?

How to propose longer-term strategies for developing your organization’s journals – including plans and proposals to develop existing titles and for acquisitions and new launches.
